Bad Days

Have you ever had one of those days where you just can't seem to get a grip.  A day where you feel you just lose your testimony and wish you could just hit the rewind button.  UGH!  Well maybe it is just me.  It is so humbling;... so I suppose it is a good thing.

I suppose it is always good to remember that we all fall short of the glory of God and that it is His glory in us that draws others to Him.  Not our own manufactured goodness or godliness.  That sort of humbling helps us be more forgiving, understanding and long suffering with others short comings.

Maybe we all need a day where we can't get a grip sometimes.

Let's just hope we don't do too much damage while we are losing our grip!  HAHA

Road Map to Freedom

God doesn't make us think like Jesus.  It is my responsibility to take all of my thoughts and make them obey (or line up with) Christ and what He says in the Word of God.

Jesus displayed in the Word a well laid out road map for life.  So if we study the Word of God and put it into action through our obeying the word (thoughts and actions); we will abide with Christ (Remain in Christ). We walk in the word or walk out the word.  We will do the will of God and not abide in our own fleshly desires, sin, and nature.  We will be free.  This will bring us peace with God!

We must be in the word to do this.  We also need to be studying the word so we will know the Father.  We need to know who He is, what He says He can do and what His will is.

When you have walked with God for a time, you find that the true evil that is overcome, is the evil within yourself.  The kingdom of God comes not through this world, but it comes within us, as we surrender to our heavenly Father.  Praise God!  I am ready to be set free from this body of sin and death.  (check out Romans chapter 7 and hear Paul's similar cry)

We cannot do the following list below in our own strength  (or if we can, it is only temporary)  We my allow God to do His work of Jesus Christ in us by surrendering to the leading of the Holy Spirit within us and by being in His word for guidance in obedience and surrender.  So we will recognize the Holy Spirit's leading and be able to test it.  The Holy Spirit will not lead you to act contrary to God's Word.

  1. Walk in the light.
  2. Love one another
  3. Think Jesus' thoughts
  4. Treat others as Jesus did
  5. Embrace Jesus' desires
  6. Depend on Jesus through the Holy Spirit.

Some of my thoughts are prompted by Oswald Chambers.

Simplicity of the Gospel

Gospel Simplified!?!?

According to the scripture, I am in right standing with God because I believe Him and accept what He says.  He is the creator, He made the rules, and He knows how His creation operates.  So if I believe Him, then I will obey Him by following His commands.  When I  follow His commands, I will be purified.  As I obey, I grow up, I mature in my spirit, and I love other believers; so that by that love, the world will know that I follow Christ.  As the body, we are joined together to become a place for the Lord to dwell in His Holy Temple.  This is true individually also.  We are able to go to war against the enemy of our soul.  We can even take our own thoughts captive and make those thoughts line up with what Christ says in the word.  We dress ourselves up in Christ with the full armor for our battle against the evil in this world, and we put on our shoes of peace so we can GO into the world that sees who we belong to by our love for each other, and draw them out of darkness(world) into the light(love/peace).  We then teach and immerse them in all that God is.  We teach them the commands and encourage them to obey them.  Then as they grow up in their faith, they will GO and draw others out of darkness to light and so on and so on….

See all the scriptures referenced below.

Belief >> Righteousness:  God decided to accept Abraham's belief as his righteousness. (Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. Gen 15:6; Gal 3:6)

Belief >>  Salvation:  God decided even though we don't deserve it, to save us because we believe.  (We are saved by grace through faith. Eph 2:8)
  • How can I let the word dwell in me?  By reading it. By obeying it, and obeying it is doing what it says. (Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly. Col 3:16a; Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says. Jas 1:22 If you Love me, you will obey me.  Jn 14:15)

Obedience >> Purification: We are able to be purified when we obey the truth/word.  Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere...
When we obey the truth we will love one another.  ... Love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart...   We get rid of all the things that can hinder our purification.  Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.   And we are to grow up in our salvation.  Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.  1Peter 1:22-23; 2:1-2

The world will be able to see we belong to Christ by our love for our brothers and sisters in Christ.  By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.  Jn 13:35

Christ is like the mortar that holds all the living stones together in a bond of unity.  In him, the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.  And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.  Eph 2:21-22

Remember that the weapons are spiritual.  We are able to conquer our thoughts that pretend to be bigger than God by making our thoughts line up with the what Christ says.  We need to make our thoughts obey Christ.  For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.  On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.  We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.  2 Cor 10:3-5

Scripture tells us to put on love, put on Christ and put on armor of God etc. If we just deal with getting rid of our sinful behavior, yet do not take the time to put on all we are commanded, we will stand naked before our enemy and be very vulnerable. Therefore put on the full armor of God... with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.  In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.  Eph 6:13-17

As our feet are fitted and ready, we go to the world with our good news not just on our lips, but also demonstrated in our actions.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you... Matt 28:19-20

Abiding in the Temple

I have been reading several books that have been confirming my thoughts regarding abiding and the care of the temple of the Holy Spirit which is our body for those who belong to Christ. So do not grow weary in caring for God's temple for his Holy Spirit. Ask him to equip you, strengthen you, and lift you up. Be of good cheer for The Lord your God is with you.

According to Rick Warren in his book The Daniel Plan, the key to long lasting success is developing new positive habits. Consider that your body is not yours. Your the caretaker of God's property so ask Him to dwell with you/abide with you. Be motivated by that and by knowing you will give an account for how you cared for your body. This knowledge is not for your condemnation but for your motivation.
As for our own will power and shear determination, it is only good for about a month or two. BUT His power within you, sustains you and will help equip you.
Notice a tree: The limbs and branches are not working and concentrating on producing leaves and fruit. As long as it remains attached to the trunk it just produces. He said we would be like might oaks of righteousness. Think of the many that could rest and seek refuge in our shade. So all we need to do is remain in connection with Him. Let's learn how to abide in His presence. Let's learn to be aware He is with us. Let's learn to be satisfied in our relationship with Him. Running our daily decisions before our counselor guide and friend. Just communing with him. As much as we lean into Him and remain with Him, we will abide. As much as we abide/remain in His love, we will be satisfied. As much as we are satisfied in Him, we will be able to succeed in caring for His temple.
Regarding abiding: You can be married and not feel connected to your spouse. You can be in a crowd and feel alone. Why? I think it is because we are not connected Think of a time when you felt in good fellowship or connection to another person What was it you were doing? And why did you connect. I believe that may help us transfer how to feel more connected to God. Being connected to Him is the key to everything.

Just look at the Old Testament pictures of the priest busy caring for the temple. It was the place where the "Great I Am" dwelt. If we spend time not worshipping our bodies, but taking care of our bodies in the best way we are able to, in order to be able to be an instrument useful to the Lord of our lives.

Abiding with Christ

In the last blog, I spoke of the need to stay in contact with Jesus and when you feel empty or drained, it is an indicator that you need to go get filled.  Being empty is not to condemn us, it is only to be our indicator of our need to be with Jesus.

Same with sin.  It is not for our condemnation, but it is for us to take action.  When the indicator light on your dashboard of your car shows you that you are in need of gasoline, you do not condemn the car, you just go get it filled.  Let sin, emptiness, even the unsatisfied appetite that drives those scales up, let that be your indicator to ABIDE with Christ.

I have a walking buddy that I have been talking with regarding abiding, and much of what I will share here, is a result of my discussions with her.  Also it includes my prayer time, my personal research and study time in the word to include what I have concluded.

I knew she had studied this topic through BSF in the writings of John several years ago.  So I really wanted her input on abiding.  As she and I discussed this topic, I asked her what it looks like to abide since we are told to abide in the scriptures.

Her response made so much sense, and I will try to do it justice.  We live our life and as we do, we consult with Him; if we respond wrongly, we ask Him why.  It’s simply recognizing Him in our day, during our day, as we go throughout our day.  We talk with Him, spend time with Him, think about Him, and acknowledge His presence. (In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path)  (He is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path)

Abiding in Christ is living and remaining in Christ.  We walk in the Word that we study.  We do the will of the Father when we remain IN HIM.  We measure our thoughts against what we know about God through His Word.  A friend posted this quote yesterday by Oswald Chambers: “God will not make me think like Jesus, I have to do it myself; I have to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

Abiding is remaining connected to the life source.  (Click here for scripture verses regarding abiding) By being connected, we are one with Him.  We walk as Christ walked, treat others as He treated them, embrace His desires, think His thoughts and become more and more dependent upon Him.  So that I become a walking, living, breathing message of who He is.

She said we must know who He is.  She stressed that He is the measuring stick of righteousness.  The verse in Matt 28 tells us to immerse in who God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is.  According to this scripture we are to "go make disciples of every nation, and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit."  Their names are simply attributes to describe who they are.  (Click here to see the 7 “I Am” statements of Christ)

According to an article from Real Truth Matters, when we remain in Christ, connected to the vine, the character of Christ is displayed.  If this is not happening then it is an indicator that we have not been interacting with the Savior.  (Click on this link to read further)  The following is from this link.  In this article, it goes on to say, to be fruitful we must remain in Him and Him in us.  If we abide, His joy will remain in us.  Boredom implies we are missing contentment.  It means we are looking to be entertained and stimulated.  If Christ is no longer stimulating our mind, heart or emotions that means we are having no real interaction going on between us and Him. (this is where I believe the eating issues result)  Click here to see Empty Stomach or Empty Spirit

So to abide with Christ is the same as being filled with His Holy Spirit.  We need to be desperately dependent on the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.  We need to have conscious interactions with the Spirit of Christ.

The last thing from this link, Real Truth Matters, is we need to be actively in fellowship with the Holy Spirit.  We need to humble ourselves and confess our disregard of His commands to abide.  We need to repent for forsaking the living water so we could live by our own strength.  He says we try to be both the vine and the branches.

Remember that apart from Christ we can do NOTHING!

Summary:
Sin, Emptiness, Feeling Void and Dissatisfied, Filling the Void with something; are all INDICATORS of our need to ABIDE.
Abide – Be dependent upon, connect to and interact with our Lord daily and throughout the day.  (STAY connected to the vine- do not be cut off)
Be immersed in who God is; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Display the character of Christ.

Take your thoughts captive and line them up with Christ’s thoughts

Empty Stomach or Empty Spirit??

Today I wanted to talk about our eating habits; empty stomach or is something else empty.  I know, I know, we really don’t want to hear about it.  But let’s be honest, many of us tend to eat the way we eat, not out of hunger, but to fill a void in our lives.  Food is seen as THE ONLY VICE that a good Christian can have without much judgment from the church.  I believe that overeating is not only deadly when taken too far, but can compare to alcoholism or drug addiction especially when we use it to self-medicate, fill our loneliness and boredom.  (Note: Obesity is an epidemic in our society and the church is not exempted from that.)

Anything, including food, used to excess has the potential to become a problem.   We don’t need to allow anything to have mastery over us except God.  We have been given self-control as part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit.  The definition of self-control is the ability to control oneself.  It involves moderation, constraint, and the ability to say “no” to our baser desires and fleshly lusts.  All substances, whether food, drink, drugs etc., can be managed.  Drugs when used properly can offer relief to the body and even allow it an environment to heal.  We have to eat and drink to nourish our bodies.  But even too much water can harm the body.  We need to exercise our self-control in order to become managers of our lives.  When anything in our lives is controlling us, we are not managing our own lives.

So how do we force the hands of food to release its grip on us?  I was listening to Rick Warren’s radio program where he talked about a book, “The Daniel Plan”.  It’s not just a diet and exercise plan, it includes faith, food, fitness, focus and friends.   I HAVE NOT read the book, but those 5 areas make sense.  There are a multitude of things we can do to alter ourselves.  However, I believe that community is a great aid to encourage us to make healthy changes in our lives.  According to the advertisement for the book, “Accountability helps provide us with the power to make changes.”

There are many food plans available to choose, and some are good, healthy and satisfying.  Make a decision based on what works for you based on preferences and taste; to determine your food road map that others can journey on with you.  Also, there is a multitude of ways to exercise the body.  A decision needs to be made to get the body moving, (be a body in motion as much as possible).  This determines your exercise road map.  Find exercise you enjoy and couple it with a companion or two.  Every trip is better when we go with family or friends.

That addresses, food, fitness, friends but I also firmly believe that many of us will not be successful if we do not address our faith.  God created us to be in fellowship with Him.  Mankind spends a great deal of time trying to fill this void whether saved or not. Sadly, many never understand the deficit they are experiencing can only be filled with God through faith in His Son by the Holy Spirit.  We as the body of believers can and should have the answer demonstrated in our lives, but I believe the problem is we approach it incorrectly.

Many times we are approaching Christianity in the flesh and using world standards and approaches to understand it.  This approach brings moral conformity, but that is not fulfilling.  Christianity is not conformity but transformation.  It is not beating the flesh into submission to a set standard, but it is a spiritual connection between two spiritual beings.  This connection not only satisfies the soul, but it also enables us to accomplish those standards and morals.   That is the different approach.

To put it another way, we are doing empty religious activity instead of having a vibrant, satisfying relationship with our creator.  We sit in the pews of our church singing praise songs lifelessly.  We are reading our bible, yet not connecting with the true meaning of what the Word is saying to us.  We are serving the Lord and His people out of duty/obligation, and we are being drained of all our strength.   We are trying to be good, trying to keep the commands of our Lord, trying to love the world but it is just not bringing joy, or even real change.  All I hear is DUTY, DUTY, DUTY!!!  Guess what, that is not what God intended.

We were meant to be in communion with our creator and out of that will spring all manner of praise, obedience and joy that is unspeakable.  We will love the unlovable, and we will serve out of the overflow (and if we are really connecting with Christ in our service, we will continue to be filled even as we serve).  When we do get drained, we need that to be our indicator to go to the source for filling.  He is our “filling station.”  That is what gas stations used to be called.  When our car is empty, we go to the FILLING station to get full.  Let’s recognize we need to be walking with the source of our joy, strength, love etc.  ONLY this relationship can fill us.

If you find you identify with what I am saying, take some time to BE with Jesus.
This is where I believe we begin to ABIDE!  And when we abide, our spirit receives nourishment, just as when we are hungry, we eat healthy foods and our bodies receives nourishment.

Summary:
Choose the maps; Food and Exercise
Choose who will be your companions

Determine to stay connected to your Creator

Abiding Scripture Verses

John 15:2 -10
Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.  You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.  Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.  If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.  If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.  By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.  If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

Ephesians 3:17-19
so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

Step to Fitness and Overall Wellbeing

There are ways to measure your food intake & activity level.  You can journal it, what you do, how long you do it & how much you eat.  You can do it the old fashioned way by writing it on a piece of paper.  For the more tech savvy among you, you can log it all in on My Fitness Pal or a variety of other apps.  This is the one that I use and I have found it to be easy and great for accountability with friends.  It also interacts with other apps.

When tracking your activity, you can log your workouts but also I am motivated to talk today about keeping track of your steps.  You can do this with an inexpensive Pedometer or treat yourself to something a little more high tech like Fitbit.
Marc and I celebrated our 19th anniversary with one of the Fitbits each.  These are simply wrist bands that you wear and it keeps up with your steps, your activity level, even your quality of sleep.  The great thing about it is it relates my calories burned into Myfitnesspal app.
Regardless how you track the information, the rule of thumb is this, calories in versus calories out.  You consume calories as potential energy to use. It would be great if the ole saying applied here "if you don't use it, you lose it".  However, that is not the case.  Regarding calories, if you don't use it -- you store it for later!
My suggestion is the following:
Whether you want to just stay healthy or if your goal is to lose some of that "Stored for later" calories, try to get in 10,000 steps per day.
If you want to use up those "stored for later" calories, set your goal weight.  If you are within 10-20 pounds of that goal, take the goal number and add a zero to the end.  Let that be your estimated number of calories for the day.
Based on calories burned vs. calories consumed, try to create a 500 calorie deficit each day which will equate to you losing 1 pound per week. Double that and you double the loss, but no more than 2 pounds per week. OK, this means, burn more calories than you take in.  (ex. if I weigh 150 and my goal is 130 then I would either consume 1300 calories per day if I just want to lose weight by controlling my calories.  If I want to effect it by activity, I would want to increase my activity to use more calories than I consume.  Meaning I can eat more than mentioned above, but I would still need to create that same deficit.)  for more information Calories Burned at Rest: How many Calories do I Burn doing Nothing

And for those Christians that read my blog, remember that you are the temple of the Holy Spirit.  Just as the priest took care of the temple, we too are to take care of the dwelling place of the Spirit of God.
